Trump on Obama’s first year: “I think he’s doing a really good job… He’s totally a champion.”

Trump supporters always point to the theory of political evolution when they discuss why the man who financially supported the campaigns of Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and Hillary Clinton can now be considered a conservative. They also point to his understanding of people and business in their reasons to believe that he has good judgment.

When referring to Trump’s opinion of President Obama, they point to his birther campaign that he started while deciding whether or not to challenge the President in 2012. What most probably don’t realize is that before Trump got the Presidential bug in earnest and determined that his easier path was to coax Republicans rather than take his big business persona to his chosen Democratic leanings, he was a big fan of President Obama. He even gave him kudos during the President’s first year in office and wrote about him in his book, Think Like a Champion:

As of October of 2008, the U.S. government reported a $237 billion deficit. The good news is that Obama seems to be well aware of the situation. His comments have led me to believe that he understands how the economy works on a comprehensive level. He has also surrounded himself with very competent people, and that’s the mark of a strong leader. I have confidence he will do his best, and we have someone who is serious about resolving the problems we have and will be facing in the future.

It was on Larry King Live that Trump gave his strongest kudos for the President. It’s no secret that he didn’t like the Republican Presidency of George W. Bush and in Obama’s early days as President he really won Trump over with the way he was handling foreign policy and the economy. He said of Obama:

Well, I really like him. I think that he’s working very hard. He’s trying to rebuild our reputation throughout the world. I mean, we really have lost a lot of reputation in the world. The previous administration was a total disaster, a total catastrophe.

There’s no doubt that his supporters will follow him blindly because he’s saying the right things now. Those who look beyond the sales pitch stump speeches might be surprised that Trump says whatever will get him what he wants at the time.
