It’s ironic that a country that has gone through so much turmoil for the sake of freedom over the last five years would resort to direct quashing of political speech in order to maintain stability. That’s what’s happening in Egypt right now as protesters preparing to go to work on the five-year anniversary of the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak.
Three activists who were using Facebook to promote the protests were arrested for alleged participation with the Muslim Brotherhood, an organization that has been banned in Egypt ever since the more recent coup of Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

This is being seen as a victory against terrorism. We aren’t so sure. While nobody is fretting over the coup over the Muslim Brotherhood government, there are those who long for the days before the Arab Spring. It’s easy to label anything as being terrorism when the press is controlled. Until we know for sure that they were supporting the Muslim Brotherhood and not the pro-American policy of Mubarak, we won’t condemn the three activists.
If, however, it turns out they were definitely part of the Muslim Brotherhood, we’ll correct our story to demonstrate support.
