Regardless of Your Opinion About Guns, You MUST See the President’s Actions Correctly

No, this is not going to be another conservative article bemoaning the liberal agenda of gun control or dismissing concerns over gun violence. I want you to stay focused on the real issues here, which is difficult because the President is trying to change the conversation.

Even if you believe, as many do, that background checks should be expanded in the way that the President is planning to roll out soon, you have to realize what’s really happening here. This isn’t just about guns. In fact, it’s not even mostly about guns. The President’s hints towards a gun controlling executive order are mostly just a smokescreen to mask the issue of terrorism and to distract us from the real threat that faces our country.

I’m not going to try to convince anyone that the idea of “more good guys with guns” is the way to keep all Americans safer. If you haven’t put that together on your own based upon where mass shootings and gun murders happen the most, then you’re not going to be convinced by common sense, either. I’m also not going to point to the facts that increasing background checks would not have prevented the mass shootings that have taken place in recent years. Again, you either know that or you ignore it.

What I do want to focus on is the idea that improved security measures are the real solution to many of our problems today. That means border security cannot be placed in the hands of Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders. That means that the immigration security measures proposed by Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, and Donald Trump all make sense to some extent (though none of them have proposed an ideal plan). It means that you must all stay focused on the problems at hand. Don’t be distracted by the President’s farewell tour.

Gun violence is the third most important issue to President Obama as it pertains to his planned executive order. We’ve already established that the most important thing to him is to use it as a smokescreen to cover up the real issues, a distraction to point us in one direction when the real problems lie in the other direction. The second biggest reason he’s doing it is because he wants it on his legacy sheet. This has been arguably the most ineffective Presidency in the last 100 years. His biggest legacies so far are Obamacare (which is failing), killing Osama bin Laden (which had more to do with timing than anything he actually did), the Iran Nuclear Deal (don’t get me started), and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (which is an embarrassment if it’s actually accepted, something that is looking less and less likely).

His most prominent legacy, of course, is gay marriage. That’s a discussion for another article.

President Obama wants gun control on the books during his time in office. It’s more important for his legacy than for the safety of the American people. Meanwhile, he’ll use it as a smokescreen to make Americans less safe from terrorism.
