The Three Real Winners of the #GOPDebate: Fiorina, Cruz, and… O’Malley?

There will be a million articles about who won and who lost this week’s GOP debate on CNN. We’re going to sum it all up in an article that can be read in under two minutes with just the reality and no spin.

Who didn’t win:

  • CNN: Embarrassingly bad questions that were geared towards making as many candidates attack each other as possible overshadowed the ratings boom they were able to milk out of the three hour broadcast.
  • Donald Trump and Ben Carson: Both were in position to make huge gains. Trump did nothing other than tone back his attacks and Carson made mistakes with his answers. Carson will get a little bump because he was likable but Trump didn’t win very much new support.
  • Jeb Bush and Chris Christie: They each came close to breaking out but made as many mistakes as victories.
  • John Kasich, Marco Rubio, and Rand Paul: All showed signs of making a move. All squandered them and will likely have some of their support erode.
  • Mike Huckabee and Scott Walker: Both had nice moments, just not enough airtime. They will be forgotten very quickly.

Who won:

  • Carly Fiorina: No doubt she was the most passionate and opened eyes, particularly because it’s her first time to sit at the adult table for a debate. She’ll get the biggest bump.
  • Ted Cruz: Made the most of wonky questions despite having less airtime than five other candidates. Hit home with Iran and Planned Parenthood.
  • Martin O’Malley: He wants more debates. The GOP debate was a great reason to listen to him. Whichever frontrunner the DNC is trying to protect won’t be able to hide behind them for much longer after great Tweets like this one:

Sadly, this won’t have a huge effect for anyone in the polls other than Fiorina. It may start chopping away at the bottom of the pack which is a good thing for the party.
