Don’t Misread Trump’s Signing of GOP Loyalty Pledge

There is a lot of buzz about how Donald Trump is signing a pledge to support the Republican nominee for President even if it’s not him. This means he won’t be able to run as an independent. It also means that he can’t trash the nominee. These sound like good things and they are, but the reason for him doing so is not what people hoped.

He isn’t signing the pledge to be a good party contributor and supporter. He’s signing the pledge because he now believes he will win the nomination and he needs to cut off complications. Some primaries could exclude him from the ballots if he doesn’t commit to this. More importantly, he will be attacked at the upcoming debate if he doesn’t agree to support the nominee.

This isn’t about Trump coming around and being a good representative of the Republican party. It’s just a way for him to get more press (and therefore votes) for being pro-GOP when in reality he now considers it safe to push forward his real agenda of being pro-Trump. It blows my mind that so many Republicans are still so blinded by his ambitions. Normally, ambition blinds the ambitious one but in this case he’s been able to use it to blind his supporters as well.

I get it. I loved what he was saying and he was the first candidate I supported. I’ve now seen the light and understand that he’s not only bad for the party but that he would be bad for the country if elected. The only benefactor of a Trump presidency is Donald Trump. This pledge doesn’t change a thing.
