Iran needs the support of the United States. That has been made clear by last month’s semi-successful negotiations that will bring support to the Middle East country in exchange for a slowdown of their nuclear program. In the big picture, it makes sense to try to do whatever is necessary to prevent them from obtaining nuclear capabilities.
It was in some ways a minor victory, but it should not have happened at all. The United States and the rest of the world should not be willing to make any concessions with a nation that wrongfully imprisons its citizens. It should not be dealing with a country that tortures a United States citizen for his faith. These negotiations should have been abandoned until evil regime of Iran was willing to release Pastor Saeed Abedini, a man who committed no crime against Iran or its people. Instead, the United States and the Obama Administration is abandoning Pastor Saeed.
Iran would have released him. He simply isn’t important enough in the Muslim country. He wasn’t a spy. He wasn’t starting an uprising. He wasn’t hurting a single person. He was trying to start an orphanage when he was detained, tried, and jailed. He’s a tiny speck and Iran would have released him if President Obama would have asked. Had he and Secretary of State John Kerry stated that they were unwilling to consider lifting sanctions unless this wrongly-imprisoned US citizen was released, they would have done it in a blink of an eye. He’s not even a symbol of any sort in Iran. The majority of the country has never heard of him.
Instead, while President Obama is enjoying Christmas in front of a lush fireplace with his family, Abedini’s children will be crying about their father missing another Christmas. His wife will be crying knowing that it’s very likely that her husband is getting beaten in the worst prison in Iran so that they can help him “celebrate” Christmas in style.
Of all of the lies and failures that have plagued this president, this is the worst of them all. Sure, it’s just one man at risk here. It’s just one man who could be killed by other inmates or guards at any moment. It’s just a guy.
How can President Obama can look at himself in the mirror without feeling utterly disgusted knowing that he has condemned an innocent man to such a terrible fate? All he had to do was ask and Abedini would be home with his family for Christmas.
