Churches and Leaders: The Cause of Many Atheists

Benny Hinn

There is a difference between those who do things in the name of God in order to achieve personal benefit and those who try to spread the Word of God. There have been misguided souls throughout history who thought they were doing the right things only to demonstrate that they misinterpreted scripture, were led astray by those who had misinterpreted scripture, or were directly influenced by the forces of satan himself. There are more “churches” and religious institutions that do evil than there are those who do good.

These and other distracting forces are at the root cause for many to adopt the concepts of atheism and agnosticism.

Science, circumstance, and other religions clearly play a large role in the rise of atheism, but many ended up heading in those directions due to a loss of faith in the people and organizations that were supposed to be leading them to the truth. This is the reason that we do not attend a traditional church. We have in the past. We’ve liked what was being said at some of the churches we’ve attended. However, our belief in the Word of God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit have been a primary reason that our own personal family ministry has stayed home through our journey in Christ.

The atheist community is growing. Moreover, they are becoming much more vocal than ever in the past. It’s no longer “uncool” or culturally despicable to profess atheism. As has been mentioned in the writings of many in recent years, the decline of church attendance does not signify a decline of Christians. It simply means that many of those who were going to church for the wrong reasons have no need to continue the charade.

Today, there are so many battles being fought for the faith. Some are good battles while others are often more distracting than positive, something we discussed in-depth in an article about the separation of church and politics. Some seem to be small but are important, such as the spreading of the word person to person, mouth to ear between two individuals conversing. Some are profound and clearly important, such as the plight to have the right to even own a Bible as is the case in so many countries around the world. With so many battles, it can be challenging to distinguish between the ones that need more attention and the ones that are doing more harm than good.

News travels fast. As people start to lose faith and focus on the ways of the world, they often find that the stories they read about religion in general in Christianity in particular are negative. They either skip over any of the positive stories or simply do not see them at all, while scandals and evidence against churches and the beliefs they reportedly promote grow in frequency. They look at the Crusades and see so many atrocities committed in the name of religion. They look at passages of the Bible taken out of context and find the worst possible verses to cling to as evidence that either it’s all a big lie or that they do not like the teachings based upon how they would apply in today’s moral system.

We will cover much more about this particular topic in the future, especially understanding the differences between historical Scripture and doctrinal Scripture, but for now it’s important to focus on the people. The Word of God is pure. The teachings of the Bible are righteous. The guidance of the Holy Spirit is proper. Don’t allow the human frailties of greed and deceit turn you from the truths of His Teachings and His Words. Men are flawed. Those flaws can turn into the worst kind of sin, using deception in the name of the Lord to achieve selfish goals. Those people and organizations already have their rewards.

To get the real reward, you need to truly follow Jesus Christ and believe in Him as your Lord and Savior. The people that falsely represent Him should not be seen a reflection of His greatness.
