William F. Buckley on Being Assertive

William F. Buckley on Being AssertiveOne of the most prominent aspects of the wisdom of William F. Buckley Jr. is that he was bold with his message while being very precise with his words. That’s not to say that he was careful. Being precise is a trait in quotations that many politicians try to master but few have ever been able to do it like Buckley.

In this case, the precise words used are “usurpatory” and “assertive,” both of which declare the meaning of exactly what he was trying to say. Switch the words would more precisely demonstrate the way that government is most often attacked; the citizenry tries to usurp assertive governments in the form of votes. Instead, we should be discerning what the government is doing, select the appropriate times when they are overstepping their bounds, and assert ourselves in multiple forms to make them aware of what they can and cannot do.
