Seriously, Bobby Jindal Must Stop Harming the Republican Party

It’s a mystery to GOP Presidential candidate Bobby Jindal that he’s polling so low, that he hasn’t had a chance to stand on the big stage, that he can’t raise money to support his floundering campaign. He’s made the right moves, put out great plans, said the right things. Why isn’t he in the upper echelon? Why isn’t he even in the middle echelon?

The reason is pretty clear – moderates don’t like him and conservatives have better options. He’s a third tier candidate who is so desperate for attention that he’s picked fights with Donald Trump in an effort to get some of the spotlight on him. Now, he’s going after another better candidate in hopes of drawing on that spotlight. After performing very well in the last debate and rising in the polls, Ted Cruz has made himself the latest target for Jindal.

Up until today, I really liked Bobby Jindal a lot. I think he has some amazing ideas and has the chops to make them happen, but his campaign is in desperation mode. If you take away desperation, this makes no sense. Cruz isn’t attacking Jindal and they share many of the same conservative perspectives. He should be challenging Jeb Bush or even Marco Rubio to a debate if he wants to attack ideology. He should attack Trump or Ben Carson if he wants to go after their political skill. Instead, he chose Cruz to be his victim in a lose/lose press attack. He did this for one reason and one reason only: Cruz would be the only one willing to debate him.

Most candidates won’t consider him worthy of their time and neither should Cruz, but there’s at least an outside chance that the Harvard debate champion might want to avoid appearing scared of Louisiana’s Governor. It’s hogwash, of course. There is nothing that Cruz can gain from beating Jindal, but the exposure will open him up for attacks regardless of how well he performs. Jindal knows this, which is why it’s strange that he would make this type of desperate move.

The saddest part is that he’s hurting his own future. Attacking other candidates will only make him less likely to get a cabinet position or even a VP nod if Bush or Cruz were to win the nomination. Moreover, his youth means that he could be a nice option in 2020 if the Republicans lose or 2024 if they win. He will not be governor next year so helping someone conservative like Cruz would make sense. Unfortunately, his ego and poor decision-making skills have him bent on damaging his own party rather than helping his own career.

If he’s going down, he’s taking someone with him. That shouldn’t sit well with any Republicans, particularly the ideological conservatives who have liked Jindal in the past. If he doesn’t drop out immediately, he risks taking his own stock levels to zero.

He’s being a sore loser. That’s understandable. Unfortunately, he is proving that he has no honor. He would rather take down others in a pathetic attempt to get some attention rather than concede that he will not be President this time around. A strategic retreat would be in order if he were an adult, but he’s acting like a child who’s kicking and screaming because he didn’t get his way.
