The First to Leave Should be Santorum

We like Rick Santorum. We believe in his passion and on a good chunk of the issues he seems to be conservative. We even pushed his nomination in 2012 when it came down to a race between him and Mitt Romney (though he was fourth on our overall list of GOP candidates when others were in the race). Now, we’re asking him to stop his crusade and try something different.

Is he the worst candidate? Not at all! He does fairly well during debates and seems generally likable to the important independent voters. We love the fact that faith seems to be an important component of his ideology. Unfortunately, there are several reasons we would not endorse him unless most other choices were eliminate, but one stands out the most: he is unlikely to be able to win in the general election.

Unless he could somehow galvanize the party and win crucial states like Ohio in the general election, he doesn’t have the chops to beat Hillary Clinton, Martin O’Malley, or pretty much any of the Democratic candidates. It’s not for lack of trying or even for lack of skill. He simply doesn’t have the x-factor that is required to beat a charismatic opponent.

While we were surprised that he threw his name back into the hat and we admire his passion to improve the country, we see Rick Santorum as a distraction and someone who couldn’t win the presidency, wouldn’t fit on most tickets as a VP candidate, and who probably wouldn’t make a great major cabinet appointee. It may be time to get back into the business world, focus on the family, write a book, and see if he can become an ambassador or something.
