Indian death toll rises in heat wave

Over 2000 people have died in India with the extreme heat wave that has struck the country. The latest report is that the heat will continue for several more days at the least with temperature expected to exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

The summer is just getting started.

“The meteorological department has issued a warning of high temperatures for a couple of more days,” P. Tulsi Rani, special commissioner of the disaster-management department in Andhra Pradesh, said Sunday. However, “there should be relief with some rains expected during the next four or five days.”

The elderly and those who work in outdoors are the most susceptible to the extreme heat that has been going on since April. The government is encouraging drinking more water and buttermilk and has set up temporary stands around the most affected regions to keep as many people hydrated as possible.

As the Wall Street Journal reports:

Heat waves are on the rise as a result of global climate change, according to the Indian government’s National Disaster Management Authority website. The severe temperatures have a “devastating impact on human health,” the site added.
