Rand Paul is correct that Marco Rubio is closer to Hillary Clinton on border security

Marco Rubio Rand Paul

It’s not the battle that Marco Rubio wants to have. While Senator Rand Paul is failing in the polls and on the verge of not being on the main debate stage later this month, his sentiment about Rubio’s weak perspectives on border security are spot on and Republican voters should take notice.

First, there was last week’s TIME magazine piece that pointed out distinct similarities between the way Rubio wants to handle the border and how Democratic Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton would address the issue.

Now, he’s going after the fact that Rubio voted against his SECURE bill that was offered as an amendment to the Affordable Care Act repeal bill. With Paul’s plan, there would be limits to visas offered for migrants from “high-risk” countries. Of course, Rubio’s vote lines up perfectly with how Clinton would have voted.

It may have been more of a play for political expediency than anything else for Rubio. By staying in contrast to his top competitor, Senator Ted Cruz, he’s trying to win over support from those who are torn between the two Cuban-American candidates. This time, he’s getting the ire of Paul, who despite having poor polling numbers is still popular with conservatives and Libertarians.

Rubio’s history with the Gang of Eight and his hawkish, albeit defeatist, mentality about promoting the continuation of domestic spying through the Patriot Act will work against him in the general election if he’s nominated. At this point, with polls showing him at third or fourth, he should be focusing on winning over Republicans rather than distancing himself from the conservative principles that he fears will hurt him against Clinton.

Paul is right to call him out. It isn’t just his similarities to Clinton that should worry Republicans. It’s his willingness to “evolve” his views depending on who he’s speaking to at the time. He’s already turned his back on the Tea Party. At this pace, he’ll be the Republican Establishment’s darling by the time Iowa goes to caucus.
