Philippians 4:6 – ‘careful for nothing’

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.Philippians 4:6 (KJV)

This is one of those few verses where the KJV interpretation of the word can be misleading to modern readers. The Greek word transliterated as merimnaō is shown in this verse to be “careful” and can make people feel like being careful for nothing means being reckless, but that’s not the intent.

In other translations, it says to not be “anxious” which is a better interpretation for our modern understanding. We are not to be anxious or worried about anything that is before us. Through prayer and supplication, even the most dire needs can be filled. That is not to say that God will answer all of our prayers exactly as we imagine them; when you’re going through hard times, it’s always good to remember the story of Joseph who went through terrible times before God made his purpose understood.
