Make no mistake. A large portion of the rebels in Syria are members of al Qaeda and related Islamist extremist organizations that have been flooding into the country for months. The push by the CIA to arm the rebels means that people who have sworn to destroy America and Israel have US weapons in their hands.
Today, the only enemy they hate more than the United States and Israel is the Assad regime. If they’re able to overthrow him, there is not a valid argument that says that these weapons would not be turned on us and our allies.
The only possible argument is the one being used by Secretary of State John Kerry, that only a small portion of the rebels are members of al Qaeda. The evidence that he has been using to this regard comes from a 26-year-old analyst with ties to a group that lobbies in Washington on behalf of the Syrian rebels.
According to the Washington Post:
The CIA has begun delivering weapons to rebels in Syria, ending months of delay in lethal aid that had been promised by the Obama administration, according to U.S. officials and Syrian figures. The shipments began streaming into the country over the past two weeks, along with separate deliveries by the State Department of vehicles and other gear — a flow of material that marks a major escalation of the U.S. role in Syria’s civil war.
The biggest problem here isn’t even the arming of the rebels. It’s the timing. Had the US stepped up and picked a side months ago, there would have been less of a need for al Qaeda and other foreign support to creep into the country. Now, it’s too little, too late. We are not going to be able to do enough to garner any form of allegiance with whatever regime replaces Assad if he is ousted.
There was an opportunity. It took decisive action to take advantage of that opportunity, and we missed that chance. Russia’s support for Assad should have given us the incentive to push further and more quickly with the rebels early on. We waited to see if they had a chance of success. That hesitation led to where we are today when more and more of the disorganized inner-workings of the rebel movement is falling under control of people who consider America a mortal enemy.
Now, it’s too late and the aid being sent is not going to give us any “brownie points” in the future.
This is not a question of whether or not we should have given them more aid or even been active in their cause before. It’s a matter of today’s situation. We should not participate in the arming of those who are intent on destroying us once they get rid of the Assad road block. The US government is making a huge mistake that history has proven to be fatal. At one point, we supported Saddam Hussein. At one point, we supported Osama bin Laden. Support now will not prevent attacks on us or Israel in the future. It just gives them more ways to kill us.
