Ephesians 2:8-9 (King James Version)
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:Not of works, lest any man should boast.
In many ways, the New Testament is a course correction for the world. The Old Testament laid out the rules through which God’s people would be able to be with Him in heaven, but time after time we failed. The rules were not hard to follow, but we continuously failed to follow them.
It started very simply – don’t eat of the fruit of this one tree. We failed at that one. From there, we were given more chances to earn salvation through works but it became clear that our earthly flaws manipulated through the power of Satan were not going to yield the desired result
Jesus came down and died on the cross to save us. Grace through faith is the only path to salvation now. It was the ultimate gift – do this one thing, a very simple task, and the glory of grace is ours. Works are not the answer. They are important in determining our place in heaven but no man is able to use works as a ticket for entrance.
