There is an argument (one that we’ve even made) that the Syrian rebels would be bad for the United States and Israel if there is a regime change. The other players involved are Assad’s allies in Iran and Russia.
For Iran, Syria represents an ally within immediate proximity to Israel. Losing that ally to the rebels could create a couple of circumstances. One might think that it would be good for Israel to stifle the reach of their sworn enemy. Others might see it as something that could prompt desperate measure; Iran may see the fragility of their Syrian ally as an accelerating catalyst for an attack on the Jewish state.
One other scenario that is not being considered openly is the potential for Israel to see this as the right time to strike Syria, Iran, or both preemptively.
These premises are being explored by both the Americans and the Israelis. Anything coming from public circles (this story included) are nothing but speculation. There are too many moving parts for anyone to do anything beyond a semi-educated guess.
