The beauty of showing a car as a concept is the fact that an automaker can test the waters and take in the public opinion before actually releasing the car for sale. Some concepts are so over the top it’s hard to ever imagine them as becoming actual cars that are seriously sold in any country. Other concepts are actually fairly close to reality and just might make it with a little bit of adjustment or changes to the look. Here we have for you five concept cars that in their current form should not make it to the dealer lots, but just might once a few changes take place.
When a subcompact car shows up with the spindle grill that appears to take over the entire front end of the car, there are going to be some serious opinions about the car. Even though we know Lexus loves this look on the front of every other car, it’s possible the LF-SA could do with one that is a bit smaller and not quite as pronounced. On the other hand, considering a majority of this car is angular in design, giving it a great shape and futuristic look, it might turn many heads and have the luxury subcompact buyers lining up to drive a car that is so hideous but so attractive.
The Tubik is an odd shaped vehicle that may or may not be an actual car. From the outside it looks like it belongs on the front of a train with the shape from the front wheel forward and once the doors are opened the appearance is that of a step up on one side into a party bus that opens with wing doors. There really is no telling what the Tubik really is but before this French automaker unleashes this on the public, there are certainly points that need to be addressed, one of them functionality.
This concept was introduced in 2008 and thankfully never made it to production. The Hako shows up with many rounded edges and a squared off cabin area. The car gives an appearance of almost being unfinished or decapitated by design and seems to be somewhat inspired by the xB, but certainly does not carry in the style and presence of the xB. The Hako is more likely to be a car you find in a box of Hot Wheels cars rather than actually driving on the road.
What do you get when you cross a pickup truck with an SUV with a sedan with a coupe with a…? You get the idea; the FCC4 was what Fiat came up with that appears to have put together every segment of the automotive world into one glorious vehicle. Unfortunately the glory did not take place and the FCC4 proved to us once again there is a reason all the different segments of vehicles exist and can’t be meshed into one, at least not all of them at once.
This car was supposed to pay homage to some of the cars of the past and when it started with the rear spoiler and Dakar yellow paint on the widebody design it should have been a no brainer to make a car that would entice many. Then BMW had to add the wrap up fenders and strange rear wheel wells that simply made a design that should be sent back and started over with a much simpler look and feel.
These five concept cars all have some merit to them and certainly took talent and creativity to design, but somehow fell short of what a car should be. Even though each one may be a work of art in its own right, cars need to be functional and give us the ability to enjoy the drive and be proud of the look of the vehicle. If these five just had a few changes to them they might all be awesome new cars to be released over the next couple model years. Thankfully they are all concept vehicles; the interesting part will be what happens when they become production models.
