Isaiah 53:5 – ‘with his stripes we are healed’

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.Isaiah 53:5 (KJV)

Isaiah 53 is arguably the most profound piece of prophecy in the Old Testament in regards to the coming of Yeshua the Messiah. This particular verse serves as a wonderful reminder that He was to suffer for our sins and heal our souls in the process.

There is a story I heard once from a Bible scholar that went like this: They would read verses from the Bible at school sometimes. One child took offense to it, saying that he did not believe in the teachings of the New Testament and that he thought it more appropriate to read from the more universal teachings of the Old Testament. The teacher agreed.

The next day they started reading from Isaiah 53 per the request of one of the students. As it told the story of Yeshua, the child who initially took offense piped up and said, “We’re not supposed to read from the New Testament!”

When they showed the teacher and the child who took offense that they were reading from the Old Testament and how it so closely matched the events of the Christ’s Passion, a seed was planted in the minds of at least one curious mind.
