Connected car systems such as Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto are aiming to be an extension of your smartphone’s display that appears on your vehicle’s center dashboard. A new startup by the name of Navdy, however, is taking a different approach.
The Navdy heads-up display (HUD) wants to ensure that you have your eyes on the road at all times while still acting as an extension for your smartphone. Navdy does this by projecting an image on your windshield that actually appears to float about six feet in front of your windshield.
The projected display connects to your iOS or Android device through apps such as Google Maps that help you navigate and then enables you to look at them without having to look down at your smartphone or at the center dashboard.
The best part is that Navdy can be controlled using gesture controls which ensures that even when you do get a call on your smartphone, you don’t have to actually grab it and fumble around with it. You’ll be notified of who’s calling on the projected display and will be able to respond to the call with a quick gesture.
Text messages can be read aloud to you so that you don’t have to take your eyes off of the road to read them. They can also be responded to using voice controls so that you don’t have to type out the words manually.
Navdy will allow drivers to customize the types of notifications that they receive. At launch, it will be compatible with Google Maps, music apps, messaging apps, social media apps, and basic phone features. The company plans to add support for other maps apps such as Waze or Apple maps in the near future.
