Bible Study: Make Time 7 Days Per Week

Bible Study Time

I have a sin that is challenging to overcome. I envy my wife. She is able to dedicate a good chunk of her time every day reading the Bible, researching about living a Bible-driven life, and getting engulfed in every aspect of the Word. I wouldn’t change a thing for her; it’s not the type of envy that eats at me. I simply wish I could do it as well.

As a business owner, it can be hard to find time. Family life is important. Business success is important. Neither can hold a candle to the importance of learning and sharing the gospel. This world is too loaded with evils for any good believer to rest for very long. The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few. We all must do the part that the Holy Spirit compels us to do, that our faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior demands for us to do.

This forces me to schedule it. I know that it’s not as sincere as feeling the inspiration to ask a question and search through the Bible for an answer the moment that it comes up, but it’s necessary for some of us. So, every night at 9:20 pm my phone beeps at me to remind me that I’m 10 minutes away from dedicating a bare-minimum of one hour to studying the Word that our Heavenly Father gave to us. It’s the instructional manual of life, the roadmap that leads us to the next life. If you’re too busy to be able to stay within your Bible for hours a day like my wife can, then you must force yourself to spend the time daily.

For some, it’s about waking up an hour earlier than normal. For others, it’s as simple as pulling away from television, internet, or gaming time and doing something worthwhile with that time. This is the most important daily activity that you can do other than actually going forth and spreading the Gospel.

It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve read the Bible. I’ve read Genesis, Matthew, and the Revelation at least 30 times each and I will continue to read them. If I live another 80 years I will have to find some way to get my hearing aid plugged into YouTube (or whatever is available in eight decades) to get that Bible time in. This is that important. It must be done.

The Bible is a book of momentum. The Words, the Messages, the Meanings (both obvious and hidden) require constant exploration. Doing it once a week isn’t good enough. Taking long breaks from the Bible can be damaging. Every day. Every day.

Circumstance may arise. You might miss a day. Don’t let it happen often. Double up if you can. Don’t limit yourself, either. If it makes sense to keep reading and researching beyond the first hour, run with it.

Lastly, make sure that it doesn’t become a chore. If it gets to the point that you’re not longer really “hearing” the Message as you’re reading, then you may need to move to a different Book of the Bible. You may need to listen or read some Bible commentary from trusted sources (though no source is more trustworthy than what the Holy Spirit writes on your heart). If you must, take a day off. You don’t want it to become tedious but being tedious is better than missing out altogether.

Read it. The Bible can be more addictive than Harry Potter books, Breaking Bad, or Call of Duty.

The Social Media Resolution

Social Media Resolution

Let’s keep this one short and sweet. If you run a business, you fall into one of four categories:

  1. Those who are using social media and seeing mixed or minimal results

  2. Those who have used social media in the past and stopped because they saw mixed or minimal results

  3. Those who have never really bought into social media

  4. Those who are killing it on social media

It’s easy for me to say that the last option is the one that just about every business should be striving towards, but the reality is that if everyone was in category four, it would actually mean that everyone was in category one. Despite the vast nature of social media, there is still a finite amount of room on news feeds, Twitter streams, and other visible portions of social media for businesses. It’s for this reason that I am glad most fall into the first three categories – it makes my job for clients much easier.

With that said, there definitely needs to be more in the last category and the likely reason that there aren’t is because so many fall into the second category. Whether on your own or through a vendor/guru hack, you’ve lost faith in social media. That was actually okay in 2012. It became less okay in 2013. In 2014, successful businesses will make it into category four or they’ll find it harder to keep their status as a “successful business”. Everything is migrating to include social as a major component. If you rely on organic search to drive traffic to your site, for example, you may will soon find that your traffic is dropping if it isn’t already. Google and Bing are betting high on social and they’re leaning towards social signals and page/profile quality as major components of their algorithm.

Search is just the start. This is the part that amazes me the most. There are local businesses that are spending thousands, even tens of thousands of dollars on digital advertising every month but they can’t seem to justify a couple thousand dollars to dedicate to a killer social media presence and integrated search engine optimization components. It’s the most trackable, tangible form of digital advertising and marketing – the smoke and mirrors required to try to prove value are gone (at least for some vendors/gurus). Make it real or go home – that’s what we’re faced with today.

In 2014, make it a priority to re-evaluate your position. Take a pitch or two. Read some blog posts. This isn’t about buying into a trend, though that alone should be pretty obvious. It’s about reading the writing on the wall – I see so many individuals who are active on social media, yet are unable to see the value of social media for their business. It’s not your fault. You simply haven’t been shown the real deal.

Find the real deal about social media. Your business success may depend on it.

The Only Real New Year’s Resolution to Make and Keep

New Year's Resolution

2013 is behind us now. Many of us have made promises that we may or may not try to really keep. Others simply don’t take it that seriously – another day, another year. For those who really want to make an impact on their lives, the only real resolution that should be made and kept going into this year is to have complete and utter faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. All of the rest are pretty much worthless.

This is a message to the Christians and non-Christians alike, but the focus must be on those who are struggling with their faith. If you’re one of those people, you’re reading all of this for a reason. Make no mistake. There may only be one person that this is written towards in the whole wide world. There may be nobody who reads these words and acts upon them, in which case it’s a personal message. I try to read the Bible every single day. I pray and think about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and I grow more in awe with every passing moment at the tremendous gift we have all been given in this life. That gift is not just what we have here. This life is only important in reaching the next. Even this life, a test of sorts, is a gift unto itself, but it’s the type of gift that we must be willing to let go for the sake of our Creator.

Often believers and non-believers alike are looking for a sign of some sort. This may be yours. 2014 is a fresh start for you regardless of your situation. Take advantage of that fresh start today, right now. Commit. Accept. Repent. Pray. Keep praying. Believe. Build strength in your faith. Find strength in the faith of others. Spread your faith to those who need it and are willing to accept it. Every single moment of your life is an opportunity to accept Christ as Lord and Savior, to follow Him and to allow Him to guide your beliefs. Every moment is a chance to accept the guidance of the Holy Spirit that flows through all things and compels us. Are you listening?

Forget the resolutions of this world. If your goal is to lose weight, ask for help (and not in the form of a new age diet). If your resolution is to end and addiction, you can’t do it on your own. Ask for strength that can only come from above. The world will tell you that you can do anything that you believe you can do. They’ll tell you that there are things that can help, that can improve your life, that can take away your problems. Don’t believe them. There is only one way. One truth. One guiding force to salvation.

2014 can be your year, but only if you give yourself away to the Lord.
